Lets start with an exceedingly wonderful molts of Scabrella (Spiniscabrella) luxembourgensis, Muller 2005,(BPM1048). Upper Part of the Lower Devonian in Issimour (West-Seite), 16 km south-west of Alnif, South Morocco. Trilobites are 17 and 17.5cm respectively in sagittal length. | A new paper titled: "Controls on Gut Phosphatisation: The Trilobites from the Weeks Formation Lagerstatte (Cambrian; Utah)" is published now in PlosONE (open access journal), and available to download here:
http://www.plosone.org
Abstract: Authors: Lerosey-Aubril R., Hegna T.A., Kier C., Bonino E., Habersetzer J. and Carre M. Despite being internal organs, digestive structures are frequently preserved in Cambrian Lagerstatten. However, the reasons for their fossilisation and their biological implications remain to be thoroughly explored. This is particularly true with arthropods - typically the most diverse fossilised organisms in Cambrian ecosystems - where digestive structures represent an as-yet underexploited alternative to appendage morphology for inferences on their biology. Here we describe the phosphatised digestive structures of three trilobite species from the Cambrian Weeks Formation Lagerstatte (Utah). Their exquisite, three-dimensional preservation reveals unique details on trilobite internal anatomy, such as the position of the mouth and the absence of a differentiated crop. In addition, the presence of paired pygidial organs of an unknown function is reported for the first time. This exceptional material enables exploration of the relationships between gut phosphatisation and the biology of organisms. Indeed, soft-tissue preservation is unusual in these fossils as it is restricted to the digestive structures, which indicates that the gut played a central role in its own phosphatisation. We hypothesize that the gut provided a microenvironment where special conditions could develop and harboured a source of phosphorus. The fact that gut phosphatization has almost exclusively been observed in arthropods could be explained by their uncommon ability to store ions (including phosphorous) in their digestive tissues. However, in some specimens from the Weeks Formation, the phosphatisation extends to the entire digestive system, suggesting that trilobites might have had some biological particularities not observed in modern arthropods. We speculate that one of them might have been an increased capacity for ion storage in the gut tissues, related to the moulting of their heavily-mineralised carapace.

But let's start with the first BIG surprise. The BPM is proud to announce that the collection is enriched by the BIGGEST trilobite ever found in USA, an undescribed Lichids, coming from the Middle Devonian Wenban Limestones, Cortez, Nevada. About 25inches!! (~63cm). A bigger image is available in the Gallery section.

| We have started to collect new material (and we have collected MANY material)for a second volume of the Trilobite Guide Book. New sites and new pictures for another indispensable book for your library. We preview the finalize the (hard) work for the end of 2012, just before Christmas (at least we'll do our best to respect this timing...) | |

| In the Collaborators section we have added our friend Rudy Lerosey-Aubril. A long term collaboration is planned to study some peculiar Cambrian trilobites with preserved internal structures, and relative non-trilobite arthropods. Welcome Rudy! | |

Thank you very much to all people that gave big interest in our book presented in the Jake Skabelund & Bob Carroll room. What a pity to not be there (Enrico), but I hope that the presence of Carlo was sufficient to fill the "gap". Here is a "souvenir" drawn by Carlo Kier, Jason Cooper, Sam Stubb, John Moffitt, Giampaolo Di Silvestro, Vittorio e Carlotta Kier, Dave Comfort and Terry White.

His passion are obviously fossils and his collection is very very beautiful. He loves to learn to young generation what are fossils, how they are conserved in sediments, how we can find and to appreciate the real value. He loves to share his knowledge and discoveries and he has tried to create a bridge between private collectors and Institutions. The result is that all the undescribed specimens lend to Universities researcher and "professors" (Italian obviously) never come back and without any thanks. And obviously without any paper describing the specimen. This is one (of the many)dark sides of the Italian culture; fortunately not all institutions have the same behavior. One of these fossils is recovered in the Back to the Past Museum, and it is a trilobite dated to Carboniferous, and belong to the genus Carniphillipsia ogivalis Thank you Romano!

Here is a short curriculum to present Richard to our visitors: Richard A. Robison is presently a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Kansas. Many of his scientific publications concern Cambrian paleontology, with an emphasis on trilobites. Previous positions and activities include Curator of Paleobiology at the Smithsonian Institution, Professor of Geology at the University of Utah, Gulf-Hedberg Distinguished Professor and Director of the Paleontological Institute at the University of Kansas, and Editor of the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology. An hearty welcome Richard!
